Do you love 'Touch'?

A welcome is extended to all Touch players interested in Indigenous/Maori/Pacific Island/ Touch, to a meeting

at the Unitec Marae

Gate 3, Carrington Road, Mt Albert

Sunday 18 July at 3.oo p.m. - 6 p.m.

The recent World Indigenous Touch held in Rotorua in January was an opportunity to discuss the future aspirations for Indigenous Touch. The representatives at a meeting endorsed future events.

FIT (Federation of International Touch) in late February sent the most recent 'Player Eligibility' policy - which now includes ethnicity in player eligibility.  This has impact on players’ eligibility to play for their nation of citizenship and also play for their nation of whakapapa (genealogy). e.g. if a player is selected for the New Zealand Team, for TNZ, with the new policy from FIT they are unable to play for their nation of whakapapa at the World Indigenous for at least two years.

This policy change was not discussed with any of the representatives at the World Indigenous Touch Tournament or the organisers, and could have impact on future WIT events.

Maori Touch NZ do not support this policy change because -

-    it does not support the rights of Indigenous people to self determination (UN Declaration)

-    it does not support the development of touch.

-    it does not honour the partnership agreement in regard to consultation and collaboration in the best interest of touch in New Zealand.

The meeting programme is as follows -

-    Welcome at 3.00 p.m.

-    World Indigenous Touch presentation - Renei Ngawati (Renei recently presented at a conference in USA, “Touch as a Health Promotion” model for Indigenous Peoples.)

-    An invitation to TNZ to be part of the discussion on the impact of the policy change.

-    An invitation to FIT to be part of the discussion on the impact of the policy change.

-    An invitation has been extended to SPARC representatives.

This meeting will be facilitated by an external facilitator.  Attendance at this meeting will determine the way forward.

Please confirm attendance, and send this invitation to your networks.

MAORI TOUCH NATIONALS 2006
The first weekend in December hosted the ninth Maori Touch Nationals at Hopuhopu, Tainui. After dismal weather leading up to the weekend, the sun shone and tawhirimatea blew.

The tournament had it largest number of participating teams, 75 in all. Rohe from as far as Waitaha (Te Poumanu) and as far North as Kaikohe (Nga Puhi) made the trip to Tainui.

The numbers in all grades had increased, with a much larger number of Under 16 boys and girls teams. All grades are extremely competitive with strong contenders in the finals. The Powhakangahau at night has become a feature of the talent of Maori on and off the field. The Te Arawa contingent displaying elements of haka, poi, Mau Taiaha and waiata-a-ringa in their well polished performance.

A taonga presented last year by a contingent from Australia (all Maori, living across the ditch) was presented for the first time to recognize a Team or rohe who supports the development of Rangatahi. This years winner is Koraha.

The overall Winner trophy is to the rohe who demonstrates their commitment to the Kaupapa of Maori Touch. These years winners were Tuwharetoa. Their four Team contingent made up of a majority of Under 16's, Under 21's and one Open side. A real tribute to Tina Porou and the roopu Kaiwhakahaere.

Training squads were selected in the Under 21 and Open grades for the World Indigenous Touch Tournament. These teams are having one training camp during the year. The final teams will be selected at the 2007 Maori Touch Nationals. Expression of Interest for coaching and Managers positions will be called for early next year. Many thanks to the Selectors who made themselves available this year. A job well done.

The referees had another successful year, with a record number of referees attending the tournament. This years Panel of referees upgraded a number of referees. The Referee of the tournament was Marcus Speck, a talented young Referee, who also gained an upgrade.

Special thanks to Hopuhopu Services for their continued support of Maori Touch.

A really special note of thanks to the roopu Kaiwhakahaere! Tu meke!!!

ALL NATIONS
Christchurch 2005

Finally landing in Christchurch after all the organization of Teams, accommodation, uniforms and the other millions of things to get us there became all worth it, with the Powhiri at Te Rehua Marae in Christchurch. The warmth of the welcome and tautoko of some of the New Zealand Team members was a great start.

Leading all the Teams, as Tangata Whenua into the stadium, was a highlight, with a responsing Haka from the New Zealand Teams set the scene for a challenging next few days.

The three Teams, Open Women's, Open Men's and Senior Mixed were all really competitive, winning the majority of their round robin games. The Finals day had mixed results, with the Senior Mixed narrowly beating Australia for a Final against New Zealand. The three Teams all celebrated by performing a massive Haka prior to the Final's game. The Team played really well, but unfortunately weren't able to defeat New Zealand.

Our evenings were ultilised to help plan our next venture - the hosting of a World Indigenous Touch Tournament.

The All Nations was an opportunity to profile Maori Touch N.Z. Teams as competitive, professional and positive contributors to World Touch.

We are extremely proud of our Teams, coaches, Managers, and Supporters.

A huge mihi to the Whanau from Te Rehua Marae, Tania Nathan and her Whanau for looking after us, so well.

Many thanks to everyone!
Carol, Gerard and Sue.

Mihi to Nui Bartlett
Ka nui te mihi aroha kia koe Nui. To Rauna and Whanau we wish you all the best in a speedy recovery from Nui's rugby injury.

Te Matau a Maui Open Men's winners for 2005 - a tribute to the Bartlett Whanau and their commitment to Maori Touch. This team started as an Under 21 Youth boys Team in very first Maori Touch Tournament in 1998. Several boys from this team were selected in the Maori Under 19 Teams for the Youth World Cup held in 2001. It has been awesome to follow this Team in their quest to be the current Open Men's Champions. Ka pai.

To Nui, Our thoughts and aroha are with you. We look forward to seeing you and your Whanau at the Maori Nationals.

Nui is recovering at the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch.
